Project – June 8, 2008
What?
Volunteers joined WildPlaces and the U.S. Forest Service to replant 30 Giant Sequoia seedlings on the Trail of 100 Giants. The seedlings were propagated in the Springville nursery and the Cal Native Plant Nursery in Porterville from seeds collected from the Trail of 100 Giants.
Why?
The Proclamation establishing the Giant Sequoia National Monument states that “a century of fire suppression has led to an unprecedented failure in sequoia reproduction…” This along with natural and human caused tree mortality has created a need to increase the numbers of seedling in various groves.
Who?
Immersed in the Wild students from Walt Whitman Continuation High School in Los Angeles joined educators, volunteers, the U.S. Forest Service and the public to plant Giant Sequoia seedlings.
Where?
The Trail of 100 Giants is located on the Western Divide Highway in the Giant Sequoia National Monument in the Southern Sierra Nevada.
Project – September 27, 2008
What?
Sequoia Forest Day was held on 9/27 as part of National Public Lands Day and MyYouth Summit. Students planted 25 Giant Sequoia seedlings at the Trail of 100 Giants and watered over 80 trees from previous Sequoia Forest Days plantings. They learned buckets about Giant Sequoia ecology, history and and lore.
This was the third Sequoia Forest Days event sponsored and organized by WildPlaces. Sequoia Forest Supervisor Tina Terrell attended the event and helped the youth plant trees while discussing with them career opportunities in land management and opportunities for woman and people of color.
Why?
The Proclamation establishing the Giant Sequoia National Monument states that “a century of fire suppression has led to an unprecedented failure in sequoia reproduction…” This along with natural and human caused tree mortality has created a need to increase the numbers of seedling in various groves. What better way to address this issue than by planting Sequoias and teaching our youth about these magnificent giants!

25 young people from the Migrant Education Program and Lindsay Unified School District
