Join WildPlaces and Sponsor-a-Sequoia.

Not everyone gets a chance to ensure the survival of the planet’s largest trees. In fact, most people probably don’t even get the opportunity to see a Giant sequoia. But now, through our Sponsor-a-Sequoia program, you can do both.

When you sponsor one of these magnificent trees, not only do you help ensure the survival of this unique species, you also make it possible for future generations of people to experience the magic of a Giant sequoia grove.

WildPlaces works with local, state and federal agencies, foundations, and other non-profits to protect and enrich the ecosystem of the foothills and high Sierra Nevada range. Initiatives include long-term management planning of Giant sequoias and outreach and enrichment programs to educate people about this special habitat.

WildPlaces brings hundreds of young people from the urban sprawl of Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Fresno and rural communities throughout the San Joaquin Valley into the woods, most of them for the first time in their lives. These young people return home amazed, changed, and excited about the world outside.

They are inspired to keep wild places wild, and when you sponsor a Giant sequoia you help make that inspiration possible.

Your donation allows the staff of WildPlaces to plant trees and monitor their growth, track changes within Giant sequoia groves, work with the US Forest Service to manage the regrowth of sequoias in burn areas, and much more.

None of this can

happen without funding. In a time of diminishing public resources and interest, we must all really think about how we want to invest in the future. WildPlaces proposes that investing in youth and in Giant sequoia plantings are the ultimate long-term investments.
This program is made possible by the unwavering support of our sponsors, including Save-the-Redwoods League, Bank of the Sierra, Foundation for Youth Investment. The Rose Foundation, and Steven Brye.

Will you join us?

Two Sierra Nevada conservation organizations will be in Springville, CA (Tulare County) in the southern Sierra Nevada from March 5th until March 6th, 2011.
When: February 12, 2011

Where: Sequoia National Monument

WildPlaces took 10 Burton Pathways students from Porterville into the Sequoias for a snowshoeing trip. Most of the students had never been to the snow, let alone snowshoeing. We had a great time snowshoeing, sledding, and learning about the ecology of the forest. We snowshoed 1 mile into Freeman Creek Grove, and ate homemade pizza, and drank hot chocolate under Giant Sequoias. Part of WildPlaces’ mission is to lead volunteer efforts in our public lands, and on this trip we engaged the youth in a watershed restoration project. The students collected dozens of cones for the purpose of growing out seedlings for WildPlaces’ Sequoia Forest Days. We look forward to working with Burton Pathways in the future, and we would especially like to thank Yvette Jaquish, Jan MeKeel, Jonathan Silverman, Don Erickson, and BAWT for helping this trip happen!
