Biological Indicator Identification Service Learning – May 2010

May 8 – Biological Indicator Identification Service Learning with Strathmore High School.

This service learning project engaged students in assessing the overall health and quality of the Tule River by identifying the types of aquatic macro-invertebrates (bugs that live in the river) that can be found. In knee deep water students caught insects in a kick net, then using an identification key they identified each insect they found and categorized it based on its tolerance to water born pollutants. Engaging youth with their environment is an important step for the future of our planet. California faces severe water quality and shortage problems that the next generation must deal with. This project engaged the next decision makers with the issues of their time. Thank you River Ridge Ranch for providing the facilities.
